Date of most recent changes: June 17, 2024
I. Policy Statement
This policy sets forth conditions upon which Onondaga Community College (OCC) will recognize student organizations.
Recognition
Official recognition of a student organization by the College entitles the organization to certain benefits, including eligibility for College student activity fund monies, association with the College, the right to enroll College students as members, and use of College facilities and other resources in conducting its mission. Recognition of an organization by the College implies neither approval nor disapproval of the purposes, objectives and policies of the organization.
Criteria for Recognition
Student organizations will be recognized consistent with the principles of viewpoint neutrality and equal opportunity. Student organizations that wish to be recognized must comply with all applicable College criteria, policies, and requirements as outlined in the Student Government Association bylaws, and must accept members and operate in a non-discriminatory manner. Recognized organizations that do not comply with these requirements may forfeit recognition (known as “deactivation”), or be subject to additional sanctions, in accordance with the Onondaga Community College Policy N5 Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures. Disciplinary action with respect to an organization does not preclude disciplinary action with respect to individual members of that organization.
Recognition Policy Changes
This policy does not create a contract between the College and any recognized student organization. The College reserves the right to change its criteria for recognition or any other aspect of this policy at any time.
II. Reason for Policy
This policy is intended to allow students to form and join organizations and seek financial assistance and other benefits from the College, while simultaneously facilitating compliance with College policies and applicable law.
III. Applicability of the Policy
All members of the College community should be familiar with this policy.
