Signs of progress can be seen in the Whitney Applied Technology Center where the Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab is being built!

Just three months ago, the College hosted a celebration in the same space for the unveiling of renderings for the new facility. Shortly afterwards, contractors moved in and the process began.

When complete, the Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab will be a 3,000 square foot space where students will be trained for careers in the semiconductor and microelectronic industries. The cleanroom will be on a newly constructed second floor in the high-bay space. The first floor will be the home of other training facilities.

The Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab was designed by Ashley McGraw Architects. The general contractor is PAC Construction of Oswego. The electrician is Patricia Electric of Syracuse. Construction will be completed in 2025. The project is being funded by $5 million each from Micron Technology, Onondaga County, and New York State.

Micron Timeline

• In October 2022, the President of the United States visited the OCC campus as Micron announced its intention to build a computer chip-making plant in the Onondaga County Town of Clay.
• OCC created a Micron-related Electromechanical Technology degree program which welcomed its first students in the fall 2023 semester.
• During the fall semester, OCC Electromechanical Technology student RJ Tinsley was selected for a paid internship at Micron in Boise during the summer of 2024.
• OCC hosted Micron-sponsored camps to help inspire younger students to pursue STEM-related careers including Girls Going Tech in May 2023, Chip Camp in July 2023, and Girls Going Tech Espanol in October 2023.
