Throughout the week we are highlighting students who are completing their degrees this month. Today we introduce you to Jayden Allen.
When Jayden Allen graduated from Central Square High School two years ago, he knew he wanted to go to college but wasn't sure which degree program to choose. That brought him to Onondaga Community College. "I thought if I came here I would have a lot of broad options to choose from. And if I didn't know yet (what to study), I'd be able to get all of my prerequisites done."
He spent his first year in a computer-related program, then decided to switch to Mechanical Technology. "It's very hands-on. It's a lot of critical thinking. I love it so much. It's perfect for me. And I love the real-world experience my professors have."
As his academic path came into focus, he enjoyed working on campus in the Learning Center which provides free tutoring to students. "I work at the front desk. My job is to help answer students questions and help them with anything such as tutoring appointments. I try to be as cordial as I can and polite as possible. It's a pleasure to talk to everyone and help others out."
After he completes his degree, Allen will transfer to SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica where he will major in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He's pleased with how everything worked out at OCC and where he's going next. "I wish I would have chosen Mechanical Technology first but I'm glad I found it and I'm very satisfied. SUNY Poly Tech is an amazing school and I'm looking forward to going there and learning. I've made a lot of friends here and connections with professors. But I'm excited to see what happens next!"
