Throughout the week we are highlighting students who are completing their degrees this month. Today we introduce you to Sylvester "Sly" Seton.
Sly Seton came to Onondaga Community College in "figure it out mode." He was an outstanding high school basketball player who knew he wanted the opportunity to keep playing in college, but wasn't sure what he wanted to study. After graduating from Bishop Grimes High School in 2022, he enrolled at OCC that fall.
Seton tried a couple of different degree programs before settling on Art with a specialization in Graphic Design. "I like the fact you can create a design that will help people get information or bring a new identity. A design can say so much without words, or the words can play a role in the design. I like making designs that are eye-catching and innovative."
His favorite professor to work with in the Art discipline is Meredith Cantor-Feller. "She helped me a lot. She helped me figure out the path I want to take and really went the extra mile."
As his academic plans came into focus, Seton spent two seasons as a member of OCC's Men's Basketball team. "I made a lot of good relationships and enjoyed playing at the college level and competing. It was fun."
Seton will complete his associate degree this month, and plans to continue his education at either SUNY Oneonta or SUNY Oswego. "Coming here was the best decision. I got to play basketball, figured out what I wanted to study, and everything worked out. I learned how to manage everything and I'm more mature now."
