Micron Brings Chip Camp to OCC

More than 100 rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students came to the Onondaga Community College campus to have fun while learning during the Micron-sponsored Chip Camp. The students were from the Syracuse City School District, LaFayette Central School District including the Onondaga Nation School, the East Syracuse Minoa School District, and several Oswego County school districts whose students are part of the P-TECH program through CiTi BOCES. The day included several  hands-on STEM and semiconductor-related activities which included rockets, circuits, inventions, chromatography, a Straw Tower Challenge, and more.

Micron Chip Camp activities will also include a trip to Cornell University to see a clean room, and a day of guided activities at The MOST in downtown Syracuse.

This fall OCC will begin offering two new Micron-related courses of study; Electromechanical Technology A.A.S. degree (two-year) and the Electromechanical Technology Certificate (one-year) program. The College is also working on designs for a new Clean Room Simulation Lab which will be built in the Whitney Applied Technology Center. Exciting plans will be unveiled soon!

Last October Micron announced it would invest $100 billion dollars in the region by building a microchip-making plant in the Onondaga County Town of Clay.
